Well, if you still know nothing about PortableApps.com, probably you are behind the times in the Portable Era. A 24107 times of bookmark on Delicious may account for its extreme popularity. Why it is so popular? Let us see a snapshot from its homepage.
Basically, PortableApps platform enables you to carry your favorite apps on any mobile devices like USB stick, iPod and portable hard drive, and then you can launch your own apps from these mobile devices when they are hooked to any Windows computer. And this is really convenient to carry your own apps just in a small portable drive.
What’s more, it is totally open source and you can use it for absolute free. “Open source” and “free”, huh, they are hot words. People like those concepts.
So it is no strange why PortableApps.com has been attracting so many supporters. And I am one of steadfast supporter. My USB’s PortabelApps package now goes as big as 5G.B.
But, I also have some grumbles over it, and many PAers also have to face, perhaps the drawbacks of open source, so many bugs in apps, lack of technical support, though, community forums are good places, but it seems that there are more newbies than experts.
And one more complain, how can I make a proprietary app portable? Maybe this has nothing to do with PA. But I find a lot of reasons to do that. For example, a lot of people may have the experience of dumping an open-source app for a proprietary one. The reasons are obvious, most of time, we enjoy better features, better support, better experience from a proprietary one. And people do have a list of proprietary apps, or some apps are non-portable, if we can turn those proprietary apps and non-portable ones into real portable ones, it will be perfect.
Well, after careful and extensive research, I find some possible solutions. It is called Prayaya V3, you may call it another app launcher, but much more than that, like PortableApps platform, it enables you to carry your apps on any mobile device and launch them from any PC, without any trace after use. The only difference is that you can directly install any apps on it without any modifications or any other plug-ins or add-ons.
You can follow me to know more about it. Below is a window interface of Prayaya V3. We can see personalized avatar, list of Prayaya V3 files and programs.
“Categories” makes it possible for you to group and name you apps, next time you want to launch an app, just find its category and click its icon. Notice that Prayaya V3 distinguishes itself from PortableApps platform is that you can install any apps on it just you do on a Windows OS. While PAers may be waiting for the release of portable version for a latest game, you have already made it portable with Prayaya V3.
“Settings” allows you to customize your V3. Please notice that V3 has two modes, Desktop mode and Window mode. Now we are in the Window Mode. And when you first install it, it will be in Desktop mode, you can change it (see the following pic), wait, I don’t think you will change it to Window mode after you see its Desktop mode. It is more cool and powerful.
This is a snapshot of Desktop mode, seems more cool, more personal, huh? All the software on this desktop is just we see in “Categories” in Window mode. In desktop mode, you can personalize you own wallpaper while the wallpaper of the host PC will not be changed.
The biggest difference between two modes is that there is a toolbar on the top of Desktop mode, these buttons are just the same as in Window mode except the one in the center “Host-V3 Switch”, which allows you to switch between host PC environment and V3 environment in one second.
So now,as you see, the main advantage of Prayaya V3 is that they can carry what PortableApps can not carry as well as what PortableApps can carry. And it is more cool and personalized, more "make any PC your PC". Maybe for a lot of people, PortableApps suite is enough, some people do have its particular needs. In this way, Prayaya V3 will be a booster of PoratableApps Suite.
Furthur more, if you can make any standard version portable, why try a portable one with bugs and problems? a replacer? maybe it is too early and hard too tell. Till now, i find some problems of it, for example, some software like Coreldraw or Photoshop can not work well with Prayaya V3 or even can not be installed, though it claims to be able to encapsulate any app. But of all daily apps and some others I have tried, especially games, it works perfect.
another problem is that it does not support Windows Vista though it gives full support of Windows OS from 2000, 2003, XP and Win7.
and lastly, it is not free. Anyway, it is up to you. Prayaya V3 allows a trial for 30 days. you have enough time experience it and make your decision.
To obtain more information and free download Prayaya V3, you can log on its official site, http://www.prayaya.com/
One more tip, if you are to run Prayaya V3 on a USB stick, make sure that your USB is a high speed one. I don’t think you will be happy with the experience if you try a USB 1.1 stick running games, Skype, Open Office etc, it is also true with PortableApps.
